Earth Hour for 2010 is something that we at the Amos W. Butler Audubon Society will be promoting. We would be eager to work together with you to help promote the event. Earth Hour in 2010 will be Saturday, March 27 between 8pm and 9pm (sunset at 8:04pm). We are interested in Earth Hour because it ties into our own initiative named Lights Out Indy (lightsoutindy.org). Lights Out Indy is an effort to get building owners and managers in Indianapolis, primarily downtown, to reduce the amount of unnecessary lighting between midnight and dawn during peak migration months. Urban lighting confuses nocturnal migrating songbirds and thousands of them are killed by flying into windows, which they do not perceive as an obstacle. The start of peak spring migration is April 1 so Earth Hour dovetails nicely with our Lights Out efforts. Our website has much more information and includes photos of just some of the dead birds we have found downtown during 2009. The issue is not readily noticeable to people downtown because one of the first things maintenance does in the morning is to clean up the dead and injured birds around their building.

hi
i thin k that this is a really good i dea! when would we have to turn our stuff off? could it not be on monday so i can still watch foot ball. no staurdays either so i can watch college games!
ewmsk12 at 10:33AM October 13
We will schedule Earth Hour in such a way that people will be willing to turn off their appliances at that time. But, yeah. You’ll have to turn almost everything (except refrigerators and things relating to that) to conserve energy. Great question.
