A hybrid could save me gas, but does anyone know how much it would increase my electric bill? Would I need to install a special plug-in?
It smells like cats have been using the rocks by my front door as a litter box. Is there a green way to get them to am-scray? Or, does certain foliage smell like cat pee? There are...

I’ve not tried either of these, but I’ve heard that citrus and pine scents deter felines from takin’ care of business in your flower beds and shouldn’t hurt them or anything else. Perhaps you could spray lemon juice or leave some orange rinds in the gravel.
If you try it, let me know if it works. I have two cats that hang out way too often in my yard (I fear the big fat one sleeps in my impatiens since there’s an approximate fat-cat-sized smushed area in the middle of the bed).

Not a good choice in the city, but a gun would be green… compost the cat, recycle the shell and the shell casing. Not sure of anything else that wouldn’t involve chemicals (spread some ammonia on the plants)other than a dog that hates cats.
It’s a mature tree, but the leaves are sparse all over. It looks like it’s going bald. Does it have a disease? Is there a “Leaf Club for Trees?”

Does it have any vines around the bottom of it? If it does, then that type of ivy kills trees. Also, how old is the tree? Many species of pear trees have relatively short lives – self destructing by split crotches, branch failure and leaf loss. Time to axe it and start anew!
A lot of us remember grandma or mom canning each year during gardening season. It appears to be making a huge come back. Is the younger generation picking up the practice earlier...

I would say yes. My mom was a canner. One year she canned 1,000 jars of stuff! I, on the other hand, have never done anything but open a can. My daughter, who is in her 20s, has done some canning and even has made her own apple butter and canned it!
CustomPubs at 9:08AM August 19
According to an article in today’s Star, reposted on green.indy.com, some stores definitely are seeing increased sales of canning jars, and particularly in the 35- to 50-year-old range.
Here’s a four-step gallery on how to can: http://photos.indystar.com/galleries/slides/7165?page=1&template=default

Circle City Metal Recycling says it takes aluminum, and I don’t think they mean just the cans. You might try calling there — if they don’t they’d certainly refer you to someone who did. Let us know what you find out!

I saw there’s a plant sale tomorrow morning at Garfield Park. And they’ll have vermicomposters. Does that mean what I think it means? Like, worm poop?
terridactile at 4:01PM May 29
It does, but it is excellent for your gardening. The seller has been raising them and can give you the poop on what a great system they are for the environment.

I just learned about this today. Not just any old worms will do. Red worms make power poo. Regular earth-worm poo is blase.

A hybrid is not an electric car, so you wouldn’t have to plug it in to a socket.
Here’s a link that explains it pretty well:

Right now there are very few and expensive plug in hybrid cars available. The hybrids you see generate electricity from braking. This energy is stored in battery packs and used to drive electric motors that help out the smaller gasoline motor.
The issue is they cost more and are more complex than a simple car that gets good gas milage. The pay back for the increased cost and complexity of the hybrid system can take a long time to pay for in gas savings. Add the fact that hybrid systems, particularly battery systems are evolving quickly and 8 year old hybrid car like a honda civic could be worth far less than a regulat civic due to the fact that the gas milage is not that much different and the standard engine car can be worked on practically anywhere and has a much less complex drive system with out all the hybrid technology.
Most hybrid components are warranted for 100,000 miles and a up to 10 years depending on the state they are purchased in. But after that warranty you have a complex system that could be quite antiquated by current technological standards.
Most hybrid purchases at this time are emotional more than cost savings driven for the above reasons. The payback is long. The same is true for the new diesel technology…. higher cost on the front end and the payback via fuel savings takes many years.
One last thing on plug in hybrids….. no one is talked about how the government will colect highway tases on your electric usage to charge a car like a chevy volt in your garage. It could be conceivable that you would use little or no gas in some situations…. you would pay no taxes on gas. They will want tax $$$, How they will calculate them is the question.
